EMILIANO BOSIO: What is your understanding of GCE? How has your academic and life’s “journey” shaped this understanding?

SHARON STEIN AND VANESSA ANDREOTTI: Our approach to global citi­zenship otherwise developed through our academic work, our lived experiences, and most recently, collaborations with our research collective, Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures. This is a trans­disciplinary collective of researchers, artists, educators, students, and activists doing research, scholarship, and artistic, pedagogical, and cartographic experiments that bring together concerns related to racism, colonialism, (un)sustainability, climate change, biodiver­sity loss, economic instability, mental health crises, and intensifica­tions of social and ecological violence.

In many ways, global citizenship otherwise is the latest manifes­tation of our long-term, multidimensional efforts to think beyond mainstream approaches to global education and social change. These mainstream approaches tend to take a normative and prescriptive approach in an effort to change peoples’ minds and subsequently change their actions. Our dissatisfaction with this approach lies in at least three dimensions. The first dimension is that we challenge the notion that our role as educators is to tell people what to think and how to act; rather, we seek to create spaces in which people are invited to denaturalize existing frames of reference so that other possibilities for knowing, being, and relating might ultimately become viable.

به طرق بسیار، جور دیگری از شهروندی عبارت از تازه‌ترین تجلیِ تلاش‌های چندبُعدی بلندمدت در تفکر ورایِ رویکردهای غالب نسبت به آموزش جهانی و تغییرات اجتماعی است. این رویکردهای غالب دارای گرایش به قبول رویکردی هنجاری و تجویزی در تلاش برای تغییر دادن اذهان مردم و متعاقباً تغییر در اقدامات ایشان می‌باشند. ناخرسندی ما از این رویکرد، حداقل در سه بُعد نهفته است. بعد نخست، آن است که این انگاشت را به چالش می‌کشیم که نقش ما به عنوان مدرسین، آن است که به افراد بگوییم که درباره چه بیاندیشند و چگونه عمل کنند. در عوض، ما در پی خلق فضاهایی هستیم که در آنها، مردم دعوت می‌شوند تا ماهیت چارچوب‌های موجودِ مرجع را قلب نموده- به طوریکه سایر احتمالات برای دانستن، بودن و مربوط شدن، سرانجام زیستا گردند.
